Women of History

If what I do prove well, it won't advance,
They'll say it's stolen, or else it was by chance.

Anne Bradstreet,

Top ten sites for women of history, women in literature, and other women who are part of our heritage.

  1. Women's History
    • About.com Guide Jone Johnson Lewis with a megasite on women's history.  Her articles and links cover subjects from ancient history to the 1990s.  Much of the information is about women's history in the United States but there are also large sections devoted to women's history in other parts of the world in many time periods. The site includes a growing number of biographies and well-selected links to information on specific women in history, articles and links on important events and trends in women's history, and just about anything you might want to study for a research project or for your own further enlightenment and interest.  There's also an extensive library of quotes by famous women.
  2. Distinguished Women
    • Danuta Bois' large collection of links and short biographies on individual women in history.  Includes arrangements in alphabetical order and by field/profession.
  3. Women Writers
    • About.com Guide Colleen Devlin's web site includes articles about women writers -- historical and contemporary -- and many links to more resources on the Net.
  4. National Women's History Project
    • From the people who brought you Women's History Month, many resources, including a great catalog of books, t-shirts, other women's history items.
  5. Feminist Theory Website
    • Hosted by Virginia Tech, this extensive library of information on feminism in its diversity: different fields within feminism, differing global perspectives, and a large selection of individual feminists.  Summary information and excellent bibliographies for further research are included.
  6. National Women's Hall of Fame
    • Located at Seneca Falls, New York, site of the first women's rights convention, this online website honors many American women with biographies online. You can also discover how to join the organization.
  7. The Emancipation of Women 1750-1920
    • An outline of the history of women's rights in Great Britain/England. Oriented to upper-level students, the information is at a summary level, but it uses hyperlinking very effectively to tie many subjects together: events, people, ideas. Sharing the same larger site the authors also present a related women's history section focusing on woman suffrage in America, called USA 1840-1960 Women's Suffrage.
  8. H-Women
    • Located at Michigan State University, this network includes email lists, topic summaries, book reviews, and many other resources for students, librarians and teachers of women's history. Not too easy to find information here, but if you're persistent, you will find many gems.
  9. Notable Women Ancestors
    • Primarily directed at genealogists, many of the biographical sketches also contain documentation of the woman's ancestry and links to related topics. Uneven in quality.  (There's also an About.com site on the topic of genealogy, with resources useful for tracing your own female ancestors.)
  10. A Celebration of Women Writers
    • A cooperative project to identify and put online many writings by women, from many cultures and ages. Mary Mark Ockerbloom is the series/website editor and she also keeps the extensive index of etexts here, but texts are scanned and edited by many volunteers.
